Core Yoga from a BMC® perspective.

Backbends. We love them. Or we hate them. Or both.

Picture yourself in a supported backbend—bolster or blanket under your shoulderblades. Wouldn’t it be nice to have that comfort and ease in a more challenging backbend?

How many of us have gone past our edges in a backbend — as in “oh, it’s only a little crunchy in the lower back...” Most of us. Nearly all of us. Perhaps all of us. No judgment.

Can we find peace and freedom in the same backbend? Balance doing with receiving?

Let’s explore our edges — the strength of our grounding, the openness of our front bodies.. Let’s find our edges — the places where we are closed — and coax them open a bit more.

We’ll do gentle and challenging postures in each class. We’ll do warm-ups, standing, supine, seated, prone and inverted backbends. There will be choice, as always. We’ll go with our curiosity in a light-hearted, playful way. We’ll let our hearts rest.

Beginners, experienced practitioners and teachers welcome.

Sara Brand-New (yes, a genuine married hyphenation) has been teaching yoga for 12 years and prenatal/postpartum yoga for 9. She received certifications through Integral Yoga in Mexico, India, and Virginia, to teach Basic, Intermediate and Prenatal/Postpartum yoga, as well as working with BNS Iyengar (yes, BNS, that’s Mysore Astanga) Patricia Walden, Baron Baptiste, and Edward Clark.

Sara has taught in schools, summer camps, hospitals, churches, YMCAs, corporations, private homes, beaches, and from pregnant women to new moms, preschoolers through high school, and all levels from beginners to advanced. After a move to Maine in 2008, she was taught and now can provide “chair yoga” to the more mature client!

Sara favors a class that contains laughter; vigorous yet slow paced enough that a student can breathe and fully experience and luxuriate in each pose, so that the full body is benefitted in each class.

Sara is also a knitter, motorcyclist, cyclist, chef and mother of a two-and-a-half year old, her greatest teacher so far, Emmeline. Of course hubby, Bob, is known for his pearls of wisdom too!

If you’re driving up the coast of Maine, do stop in for a rock-n-roll yoga class in their living room in Belfast.

Sara is a birth doula.

SATURDAYS IN THE SYSTEMS

for teachers, ongoing and registered students of mine at Hobbs
(others who are familiar with this work are very welcome with permission — contact me).

Several of you have asked how you could participate in advanced training without signing up for teacher training. Several alumni have asked how they could revisit the material and each other.

Here’s how:

On the weekends of teacher training, the 8am Saturday class is part of the training program. I am opening up these Saturday morning classes to teachers of any style, registered and ongoing students — as space allows.

The cost is $20 for the general public and on the day of the class (as space allows). The cost is $15–20 for Swallowtail alumni. If you are a registered student, you can count it as a makeup class. If money is an issue, I can offer some work exchange. Let me know beforehand.
